Code of Conduct

Every student in grades one through eight will receive the “Student Conduct Code” at the beginning of each school year as a part of their student organizer . It is fully explained to students by their homeroom teacher. It is then sent home for the parents to review with their child. This conduct code gives some vital information for ensuring good behaviour and citizenship among our students.

   B.  ENTRANCE TO THE SCHOOL

Entrance to the school will be made from the back north and south doors for students.  The front entrance is  for parents and guests, please.

    C.      SCHOOL VISITORS

A reminder to parents that we will once again be implementing our building security program.  This program requires that all visitors to the school must sign in at the office to ensure the safety and security of students and staff of the District Board of Niagara Schools.

When a parent or visitor signs in, he/she will be given an identification badge to wear until they leave  the building.  Parents who are coming in at 12 noon or 3:00 p.m. to simply pick up a student for lunch or after school or to drop something off at the office, need not sign in but must report to the office and remain in the area of the front foyer.  We appreciate your co-operation in keeping Crystal Beach — A Safe School for all its students.

STUDENT CONDUCT EXPECTATIONS

Parents and staff have contributed to the writing of a Code of Conduct.  An abbreviated version is attached for your reference.  The full version is given to students at the beginning of the year and is available on our school website.  This code encourages all students to develop self-discipline, respect for the rights and properties of others as well as independent problem-solving skills.  A more detailed version is available at the office upon request.

Our students are supported in problem solving techniques through our Character Education programs.  These programs encourage independence and foster responsible and co-operative social interactions.  Teaching self-discipline and respect is a shared responsibility of the home and school.   By working together, we can encourage our students to become good decision makers, problem solvers and responsible caring citizens.

TRANSPORTATION

Those students who are transported to school by bus are reminded that such transportation is not to be considered a “right”  but a privilege which may be withdrawn at any time.  Questions regarding transportation may be directed through the DSBN website under transportation.

Students must adhere to the following requirements in the interest of safety for all passengers and to avoid a suspension of riding privilege.

        ·   Use polite language.

·   Avoid distracting the driver by creating unnecessary noise or unco-operative behaviour.

    ·   Demonstrate acceptable behaviour which respects the rights of other passengers.

·   Be on time for pick up and departure.

In order to ensure the safe arrival of all children to their residence, the following guidelines for bus transportation will be implemented  this year.

    ·    student must ride on the bus they were originally assigned to.  Student s will not be given permission to change busses for any reason other than curriculum based assignments and/or  an emergency.  Such requests must be cleared by the transportation department.

    ·    students who normally walk to and from school will not be permitted to ride the bus to a friend’s house.

    ·    students wanting to get off at a destination other than their assigned destination on their bus route, must bring a note from the parent requesting that this take place.  The note must include:

              *      student’s name and grade,

              *      address and name of the home owner residing at the requested drop off point.

              *      date and signature of the parent making the request (and a telephone number where parent(s) may be reached in case confirmation and/or questions are needed before granting permission)

Our bus loading zone is at the north east side of the school.  Staff supervision is provided during the arrival and departure of bused students.

ATTENDANCE

Punctuality and consistent attendance are important and expected. As you may know, the responsibility for school attendance lies with the parent when the student is under sixteen (16) years of age.  As stated in the Education Act, “A parent or guardian of a child of compulsory school age, who neglects or refuses to cause the child to attend school, is, unless the child is legally excused from attendance, guilty of an offence and on conviction is liable to a fine of not more than $200.”  We are pleased that most parents reinforce these valuable traits in their children.  As the Board of Education has a call back policy for absent pupils, it is important that you contact us if your child will be either absent or late.   Otherwise, we must attempt to reach you or an emergency alternate.  The call must be placed by an adult (a pupil phoning in must be confirmed).  The school answering machine is on 24-hours a day for your convenience 905-894-3900.  If for some reason a child is to be dismissed early or to arrive late, a note is required. A pupil will be marked late after 8:40 a.m. and 12:00 noon.  Please ensure that your child arrives on time each day.  Repeated offences will result in detentions to make up time missed, accumulated at the end of the month.  Prolonged absences/lates will be reported to the Board’s Attendance Counsellor for investigation and action according to school policies.

HEALTH SERVICES

      A.  Medication, Prescription Drugs

If for some reason your child requires medication during the school day, you are asked to contact the school office.  Board of Education Policy requires that:

                ·    written parental consent is obtained;

                ·    medication be provided in the original pharmacy container;

                ·    specific directions for administration and possible side effects is provided;

                ·    please obtain a “Medication Administration” form at the office for you to complete.  This will be kept on file in the office.

                For the safety of all children, medication is stored in the office and administered under supervision of staff according to your specifications noted on the “Medication Administration” form.

        B.  Allergies

An identification of students with severe allergies is completed at the beginning of the school year.  Names and photographs are compiled on a sheet, with a list of allergies and necessary actions to be taken in the event of an emergency.  These pages are distributed to all staff members, with copies posted in the main office and staff room.  Any necessary medication is stored and administered at the office.  Instructions outlining procedures to be taken for the administration of an Epi-pen are included on the page.  Parents of students with severe allergies and / or medical conditions will need to complete an emergency plan with their doctor’s signature.  Please speak to Mr. Reynolds top arrange this.

SCHOOL INSURANCE

Student’s Insurance, provided by Reliable Life Insurance Company, has several types of coverage.  You are encouraged to carefully consider this option.  Too often students are injured through accident and parents face expenses which are covered by this insurance.

If you plan to insure your child(ren), please select the desired plan and mail the necessary forms, along with the correct amount of money directly to the insurance company.  Please note that there is a deadline date.  You can insure your child for a one-year, 24-hour a day term for under $.00!  Students who desire to take part in sports activities must carry this insurance, or have similar coverage.  It should also be pointed out that this insurance provides good coverage for damaged teeth and is recommended for this purpose.

DETENTIONS

    There are school rules concerned with punctuality, behaviour in halls, in class, on the playground, etc.  Infractions for not conforming to school rules may result in the assignment of a detention.  It is the responsibility of the student to report promptly at the time and place designated by an individual teacher or by the school administration.  Detentions have priority over any extra curricular activity.  Teachers will contact parents (note or phone call) if a detention is to be served after 3:00 p.m. dismissal.  Please be informed that consistent negative behaviour by a student may also result in, either an in-school suspension or a case conference with student and parent or suspension from school.

Crystal Beach Public School

DRESS

Students are required to wear clothing that is neat, clean and appropriate for the school environment.  Clothing that is provocative or carries racial, religious, sexual or obscene messages is not allowed.  In the event of a “disagreement” regarding clothing, the appropriateness of dress will be decided by the Principal, Vice Principal or teacher in charge.  Upon entering the building, students are to remove their hats/caps and hoods.  Outdoor clothing/winter footwear are not to be worn to class but kept neatly arranged in the lockers.  In the interests of good health and safety, appropriate gym attire is to be worn for Physical Education and sports activities.  A more detailed Dress Code is included in our Code of Conduct.

LUNCH EXPECTATIONS

Students are “encouraged” to go home for lunch when the distance between home and school makes this practical.  For the children who remain for lunch, lunch begins at 12 noon and ends at 12:40 p.m. .  Students eat in the gymnasium and are supervised by the administrative staff.  Please note that students who stay for lunch must remain on school property for the duration of the lunch hour unless a note is received from the parent.  The note must include: the date, reason for leaving school property and parental signature.  This note will be signed by the Principal and returned to the home room teacher to be kept on file.  Students who leave the school property with permission from a parent must return to school by 12:40 p.m.

Students are encouraged to bring food in reusable containers and to take uneaten food home.  It is important to note that eating lunch at school is a privilege and we expect all students to behave in an appropriate manner and to follow the “Crystal Beach Lunch Procedures” which are posted in the gymnasium.

PLEASE NOTE:   Our school lunch program is provided for students daily.  Parents will receive information on the lunch program throughout the school year.  Also note that a lunch permission form is given to parents / students at the beginning of the school year.

Crystal Beach Public School

LOCKERS

Lockers are assigned to all of our pupils.  It is the student’s responsibility to keep his/her locker neat and clean.  Students are given direction at appropriate times to “visit” lockers to avoid unnecessary interruption of students in neighbouring classrooms.  Students are to refrain from storing open beverage containers or left over lunches in their lockers.

Students in Grade 4-8 must have a combination lock on their locker.  Students are to use combination locks (Dudley) only and the combination must be given to their teacher or the lock will be removed.  For safety reasons, all lockers must be locked or they will be bolted closed.  Students are advised not to give their combination to any other student.

TEXTBOOKS

The Education Act requires that Boards of Education provide all elementary pupils with required textbooks.  Textbooks are on loan to pupils for the school year and are collected at the end of the year.  The cost of any loss or damage beyond normal use is assessed against the pupil.   Parents are responsible for reimbursing the school should a textbook become lost or damaged beyond normal use.   Report cards will not be issued until payment has been made or the book returned.

The use of a backpack or plastic bags for carrying books is recommended, especially during inclement weather.

BULLYING

Bullying is a form of violence.  It is a conscious, willful, and deliberate hostile activity intended to harm, induce fear through the threat of further aggression and create terror.  It may lead to serious forms of anti-social behaviour.  Bullying may be physical, emotional and/or verbal.  It may involve name-calling, ethnic slurs, teasing, taunting, threatening, hitting, stealing, assault, jostling and swarming, as well as cyber-bullying.

At Crystal Beach, we work in a partnership with community members to discourage bullying behaviours and to provide proactive strategies to reduce these tendencies.  Children are taught that bullying is not acceptable and that consequences are in place for infractions of bullying.

Crystal Beach Public School

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Students will be physically active daily.  The lessons in games, gymnastics and dance are designed to increase the fitness level of our students and encourage a healthy lifestyle.  For safety and health reasons, students in Grades 4 to 8 must have a change of clothing for physical education.  Please be informed that changing into proper physical education clothing is one criteria in the evaluation scheme for Physical Education and that it is school policy that jewellery, including earrings, not be worn during Physical Education classes for safety reasons.

Students find it convenient to keep clothing in a special tote or plastic bag.  “Running shoes with white or non-marking soles must be worn in the gymnasium when participating in an athletic activity.  Please have your child take his/her equipment home on Fridays to be laundered so that their clothing will be fresh at the beginning of each week.  Also, please label your child’s clothing for easy identification.

If you wish your child excused for health reasons, please send a note to the teacher.  Long term exemption will require a doctor’s certificate.

FIELD TRIPS

During this academic year, students will have the opportunity to participate in field trips.  These trips are a part of the curriculum of the school and are provided to enhance the learning for our students.  Careful planning and preparation for any trip occurs in the classroom prior to the event.  Prior to any trip, you will receive a notice.  Should the nature of the field trip require specific consent from you, a special signature form will be sent home.  The expectation is that “all students” will participate in scheduled field trips if behaviour warrants.  Consent forms must be signed and returned to the teacher or the child will not have the opportunity to participate in the event.  For those students not attending a scheduled field trip, academic activities will be provided for them at the school.

SPECIAL EDUCATION SERVICES

   When Your Child Needs Help

   Most students’ needs can be met through accommodations to the regular classroom program.  If further changes are required, the teacher will seek the assistance of the “In-School Team” (I.S.T.).  In-School Team members may include: Principal, and/or designate Learning Resource Teacher (L.R.T.), Classroom Teacher, Support Staff, Intensive Support Program Teacher.

    After discussion, the In-School Team may make suggestions for additional instructional strategies and further program accommodations or modifications. These modifications/accommodations will be discussed with parents at a scheduled case conference where an education plan will be formulated to assist the student in achieving a higher level of success.  Special Education Teams for each area of the District School Board of Niagara are available to assist students and staff at all stages of programming.  If all possible alternatives have been tried without success, the child may be referred to an Identification, Placement and Review Committee (I.P.R.C.)

PROMOTION POLICY

    Our programs at Crystal Beach Public School are designed, where possible, to meet a student’s individual needs.  In the final analysis, the decision to promote or not to promote a student is based on what we judge to be in the best interest of the student concerned.  The initial basis for all promotion decisions is the final achievement grade as entered on the report card.  Other factors considered are: age, ability, effort and work habits.

BICYCLES

Students who ride bicycles to school must consider the following:   The school does not assume responsibility for damage or loss to bicycles left on school property.  Students are strongly advised to lock their bicycle.  Bike racks have been provided for bicycles.  Please use them.  No riding of bicycles on school property is allowed between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.  All students are required by law to wear a bicycle helmet when riding their bike.

TELEPHONE

It is school policy that the school telephone line is to be used for school business.  Those students participating in extra curricular activities are reminded that it is their responsibility to make arrangements before they come to school for rides after school.  Students will not be able to use the office phone for such occasions.  Parents can help in several ways to minimize the necessity of student use of the telephone.  Some ways are:

      ·     pre-arranging/confirming any unusual after school arrangements with children before school departure;

      ·     ensuring lunches, school bags, homework are placed in a specific area for “guaranteed” pickup on the way out the door/or in a school bag;

      ·     making arrangements for after school visits to friends;

      ·     keeping an extra-curricular practice and event schedule in a prominent place and

      ·     recording special activities which require equipment such as skates, money, order forms on a home calendar.

PARENT VOLUNTEERS

   The staff at your school welcomes help.  This help can be on a regular basis or periodically.  Specific details regarding volunteering will follow in our first newsletter of the year.

CRYSTAL BEACH PUBLIC SCHOOL COUNCIL

The Crystal Beach School Council has been formed to serve as a structure for the Principal and staff to obtain advice from the school community so that its policies, programs, services and procedures can be adopted to better serve the needs of the school community.

This committee will meet again in September to formally set goals and directions and to select an executive for the 2008-09 school year.  Further information will be included in our monthly newsletter.

PARENTAL HELP AT HOME

      The support and positive interest of parents influence student attitudes toward both homework and study habits.

      Some suggestions for parents:

          ·     Show your interest and concern for your child’s efforts and achievements.

          ·     Provide a quiet, regular working area, with few distractions in the home.

          ·     Help your child organize homework/study time.

          ·     Involve yourself as the “audience” for practice of spelling, mathematics, reading concepts, etc., but don’t do the homework for him/her.

          ·     Help your child realize that making mistakes is an inevitable part of the learning process.

·   Keep in touch.  If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the school.  Do not complain in front of the children, it only results in a loss of confidence in the teacher(s).

Crystal Beach Public School

LOST AND FOUND

All student possessions should be labeled in order to provide for easy identification if lost.  A lost and found box is located in the Youth Counsellor’s Office and should be checked on a regular basis.  Remember to keep your locker locked and your combination (locks) confidential - valuable items such as electronics, MP3 Players, games, etc., are to be left at home.  The school does not accept responsibility for the loss or damage to student property that would be best left at home.  Please be informed that cell phones are not allowed at school.

GRADUATION

A graduation ceremony will be held the last Monday of school in June.  An invitation to attend will be extended to parents and to the students who satisfactorily complete their program.

STUDENT COUNCIL

The Student Council helps to organize school functions, assists in school projects and programs and represents the school in the community.  Each class elects two class representatives to the Student Council.  From this group, an executive is elected to lead the school.  The officers in the Student Council are: Chair, Vice Chair, and Secretary.  Elections will be held as early in the school year as possible.

SCHOOL AGENDAS

On the first day of school, your child(ren) will be provided with a Crystal Beach School Agenda.  This is provided free of charge from the School Council.  It is meant to assist him/her in their daily planning, studying, goal setting, and reacquaint them with school guidelines and procedures.  Hopefully, if used properly, it will become a very valuable tool to assist your child in their studies during the course of the school year.  Parents are encouraged to check their child’s school agenda on a consistent basis to ensure that all assignments have been completed.

HOMEWORK

The staff at Crystal Beach supports the concept that homework is an extension of the subjects taught in school.  Incomplete homework will be completed during lunch hour in an assigned room.  Homework can take several different forms:

        - practice                                 - completion of assignments

        - review                                   - projects

        - preparation for tests           - updating notebooks

        - reading for enjoyment or a particular purpose

        - conducting a survey

Students are advised to make use of their School Agendas to record assignments, test dates, and important deadlines.  The student agenda should be carried by the student to all classes.

If you have any questions regarding regular school work or homework, please do not hesitate to contact the classroom teacher. They will be happy to assist you.

FAMILY VACATIONS

Throughout the course of the school year, families plan vacations that involve removing children from school for a period of time.  Advance notice of the anticipated absence is required.  Children may be responsible for completing a modified assignment upon their return to school; however, assigning work to be taken on the vacation can pose difficulties for the student.  While on vacation, if you would like your child to involve himself/herself in a related school activity, the following suggestions may be helpful:

                ·    Keep a daily dairy of activities;

                .     Collect artifacts, brochures and booklets;

                ·    Put together a photo album;

                ·    Make a tape recording of an interview with residents.

After the child has returned to school, he/she may share the highlights of the vacation with classmates.

Parents of students in Grades 3 & 6 are reminded that EQAO testing regularly takes place toward the end of may and the beginning of June.  It is very important that students are present at school during the annual EQAO Assessment Period.
